Some mayors in the Salt Lake area have put together a challenge to make efforts to clean our air by carpooling, walking, public transportation, etc. The mayor of the City I work for is also participating in this and encouraging our employees. We have free passes for the bus system and the Trax as employees, so I decided I would start doing this and try to do it twice a week. It would save us a tank of gas each month, which is helpful! I mapped it all out. Walk to bus stop. Wait at bus stop. Get on bus and ride to trax station. Board trax. Read a book, or at least pretend to be while people watching. Get off at my stop. Walk to my office building.
So today was the big day I was going to start! I hurried my love bug out the door after breakfast, hopped in the shower and didn't take my time while getting ready. I grabbed my lunch and my laptop and listened to my ipod as I walked out of the house. I am going to save the world! Or at least 50 bucks a month! That's $50 more for our travel/eating out/date fundage! Yay!!
I left our house at 8:07. Still walking to bus stop at 8:17. What the heck?! If I were driving I'd be to work in 5 more minutes! I run this route most Saturdays in 5 minutes easily. My computer is getting heavy. I feel the looks of people judging me because I don't have a car and I'm using public transportation. I see a bus traveling the opposite way from my route let a woman off. She looks homeless. I fear the others on the bus might look the same! Still not to my stop and still walking uphill! I get to an intersection and while I'm waiting for the walk light, I am thinking about how I still have to wait for the bus, ride it, wait for the trax, ride it and walk to my office! This is ridiculous! I totally turn around and start walking home. Public transportation is such a good idea, but maybe not for this girl. And on another note, walking to actually get somewhere is not for me either. I like a walk around the neighborhood with love bug, but walking as transportation?! Please just give me my running shoes!
